It was 1899 - the summer of love. A penniless poet, Christian (Ewan McGregor), falls in love with an enchanting courtesan, Satine (Nicole Kidman) at a debaucherous Parisian nightclub, the Moulin Rouge.
Threatened by a jealous Duke (Richard Roxburgh) who covets Satine's affections, the star-crossed lovers are forced to hide their romance in thinly-veiled musical numbers. Swirling in power ballad love medleys and eccentric renditions of pop anthems, Baz Luhrmann's jukebox musical is "a magnificent, opulent, tremendous, stupendous, gargantuan, bedazzlement…a sensual ravishment."
Dir. Baz Luhrmann. Australia, USA. 127 min. Cert 12.
